Privacy Policy

The Smart Home Newsletter is operated by smarthomenewsletter.com, based in the Netherlands. For the purposes of EU data protection law (GDPR), smarthomenewsletter.com is the data controller for the personal information described in this policy.

• Newsletter subscription: your email address, plus any UTM campaign parameters (source, medium, campaign) from the link you subscribed through, briefly held in your browser to attach to your subscription for analytics. Your IP address and the page you subscribed from are passed to Buttondown with the signup, for spam protection and attribution.
• Post-subscribe survey: if you complete it, your subscriber type, role, company (optional free text), platforms you use, topics of interest, and region. This is stored as metadata and tags on your subscriber record.
• Contact form: your name, email address, and message.
• Website analytics: aggregated, anonymized page-view data collected via Plausible Analytics, which doesn't use cookies or collect personal data. Analytics requests go to this site's own domain first and are passed on from there, rather than your browser loading a script from a third party. Your IP address and browser user agent are used to work out an anonymous daily visitor count and are not stored. We also count how a subscribe attempt ended (subscribed, already on the list, blocked, or failed) from our server rather than from your browser, without your email address.

• To deliver the newsletter and manage your subscription
• To understand and improve what we cover, based on survey responses
• To build aggregated, anonymized audience insights (for example, "X% of subscribers work in the industry") that we may share with prospective newsletter sponsors. We do not sell or share your individual, identifiable personal data or survey responses with advertisers.
• To respond to messages sent through the contact form
• To understand site traffic in aggregate, without tracking individual visitors

We offer companies access to a commercial market-intelligence corpus, described at /intelligence. It is built entirely from publicly available market information: articles, reviews and public forum threads.

It contains no subscriber data. Not your email address, not your survey responses, not your activity on this site or in the newsletter. Subscriber information is never used as part of that product, and is never sold or licensed to anyone.

We use a small number of third-party services to process this data on our behalf:

• Buttondown - email delivery and subscriber management (privacy policy)
• Resend - contact form email delivery (privacy policy)
• Cloudflare Turnstile - bot protection on the contact form (privacy policy)
• Plausible Analytics - privacy-focused, cookieless website analytics, served through our own domain. Plausible processes and stores all visitor data in the EU (privacy policy)

These providers process data under their own privacy and security terms, and only to the extent needed to provide their service to us.

We don't use tracking or advertising cookies. Plausible Analytics is cookieless by design and stores no personal data, which is why there's no consent banner to click here.

We keep your email address and survey responses for as long as you remain subscribed. Contact form messages are kept only as long as needed to respond to your inquiry.

You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in every newsletter email, which removes you from our subscriber list. Under GDPR, you also have the right to access, correct, delete, or export your personal data, and to object to or restrict how we process it. To exercise any of these rights, contact us. You can also lodge a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens) or your local supervisory authority.

These protections apply to all subscribers, regardless of where in the world you're located.

This site is not directed at children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

We may update this policy from time to time. Continued use of the site after changes are posted means you accept the updated policy.
