Smart Bulb

Last updated: August 13, 2026

A smart bulb is an LED light bulb with wireless control built in, so you can dim it, change its color or warmth, schedule it, or trigger it from automations, with no wiring changes and no special switch required.

A smart bulb screws into a normal socket and puts the intelligence in the bulb itself. Options range from simple dimmable white, through tunable white (warm to cool), to full RGB color. Cheaper bulbs use Wi-Fi; Zigbee and Matter bulbs are more responsive and don't each eat a slot on your router.

Because every bulb is individually addressable, they're unbeatable for scenes and per-lamp color: movie lighting, a red-tinted late-night hallway, wake-up fades. Paired with a hub they react to sensors and time of day without you touching anything.

The classic gotcha: a smart bulb is only smart while it has power, so the moment someone flips the wall switch off, it's a dead dumb bulb the automations can't reach. If a room's lights get switched manually, a smart switch, which keeps the wall control working, is often the better call than smart bulbs.
