A smart switch is a wall switch that replaces your existing one and adds wireless control, scheduling, and automation to whatever it's wired to, while still working as an ordinary switch for anyone who just wants to flip the lights.

Where a smart bulb puts the intelligence in the bulb, a smart switch puts it in the wall. It replaces the physical switch and controls whatever's downstream, so you can use cheap ordinary bulbs and still get scheduling and automation. Crucially, the switch on the wall keeps working normally, so guests and housemates aren't locked out.
That's the switch's big advantage: it solves the "someone flipped the switch and now nothing responds" problem that plagues smart bulbs. Models speak Wi-Fi, Zigbee, or Matter, and many run their automations locally.
The trade-off is installation. A smart switch is wired into the wall, so it's more involved than a plug, and many require a neutral wire that older homes don't have at the switch box (no-neutral and relay models exist for exactly this). A plain smart switch is on/off only; if you want to dim, you need a smart dimmer.
